CREATIVE WRITING – Deep-Sea Jellyfish Scene

Imagine sinking slowly into a world where sunlight gives up… where colours glow from living bodies, and the darkness feels endless. Welcome to the deep sea—Earth’s most mysterious and least-explored realm.

1. Description of the Whole Scene

Before you floats a cluster of organisms resembling jellyfish—delicate, drifting lanterns suspended in the blackness. They pulse gently, each one illuminating the water around it in swirling blues and greens, colours borrowed from our own planet—oceans, forests, the globe itself.

The deep sea around them is vast and still, like an untouched universe. There is no horizon, no surface, only dark water stretching into infinite space.

2. Pan and Zoom – Focusing on Details

Notice how the bodies of these jellyfish-like creatures move—each pulse is like a quiet heartbeat, pushing them forward.

Zoom in.
Look closer at the tendrils: thin, shimmering threads trailing behind them, glowing faintly like fragments of starlight.

Zoom further.
Tiny particles drift through the beams of their light—marine snow, the ocean’s constant, delicate rainfall.

3. Thoughts and Feelings

How does this scene make you feel?
Is it peaceful… or unsettling?
Does the darkness calm you—or pull your imagination somewhere unfamiliar?
Perhaps you feel small beside these glowing creatures, or maybe curious, drawn in by their quiet light.

Let your emotions shape the story you want to tell.

4. Three Ambitious Vocabulary Words

  • Bioluminescent – glowing naturally in the dark
  • Ethereal – delicate, otherworldly
  • Abyssal – relating to the deep ocean depths

5. Three Example Sentence Starters

  • As I drifted deeper into the abyss, I noticed…
  • The glow of the creatures reminded me of…
  • Surrounded by darkness, I suddenly realised…

6. Three Ambitious Pieces of Punctuation (inc. semicolon)

  • Semi-colon (;) — to link two closely related ideas
  • Dash (—) — for dramatic pause or interruption
  • Ellipsis (…) — to create mystery or suspense

The creatures pulsed gently; their light felt almost human.

7. Scientific Fact

Here’s something fascinating:
Some deep-sea jellyfish can produce their own light through
bioluminescence, a chemical reaction in their bodies. This helps them attract prey, confuse predators—or simply communicate in the vast darkness of the deep.

8. Link to Another Subject

This scene connects beautifully to biology, where we study ecosystems and adaptations. It also links to physics, as bioluminescence involves energy transfer and chemical reactions that release light.

9. Think, Pair, Share (Oracy)

Think:
How would you begin a story set in this deep-sea world? What mood would you create?

Pair:
Share your opening lines with a partner. Discuss how your chosen colours, emotions, and descriptions help shape the atmosphere.

Share:
Present your strongest sentence to the class—and be ready to explain the effect you were aiming for.
